About Khula Kids

Our Story

My name is Mia, and Khula Kids began with a question that was personal to me. Being in an interracial relationship, where my partner is Zulu, I would often think about the children we’ll one day have, and I kept coming back to one thing: I never want them to feel disconnected from half of who they are.

I want them to hear their father’s language.
To understand it. To feel proud of it.

But the sad reality is, it’s not always that simple.

We live in a world where classrooms, schools, and everyday environments prioritise English. And slowly, without even realising it, language and culture can begin to fade.

And as a parent, that thought sits with you. Am I doing enough?

Why Khula Exists:

I knew I wanted to be intentional about how I raise my children. But I also know how overwhelming it can feel — especially if, like me, you’re not fluent, or if life is already busy and full.

That’s where Khula was born.

Khula means “to grow” in isiZulu.

And that’s exactly what we’re here to do, to help you and your child grow together, rooted in your family's language, their heritage, and their sense of self.

Whether you’re learning alongside your baby — embracing a language that isn’t yet your own — or you’re already fluent and determined to keep that part of your culture alive, this is for you.

Our learning materials are designed to support both journeys, gently and meaningfully.

Even just 10 minutes a day can become something special — a quiet, consistent moment where you bond, connect, and share a part of yourself that now lives within them.

A Letter From Me

Dear Mommy/Dad

Khula comes from my heart — from my deep love for children and the culture that shapes who we are as Africans.

I hope our flash cards give you sweet, slow moments with your little one — sitting together, sharing words, laughing, playfully and discovering the world side by side. I created Khula to help keep those moments alive, and to celebrate language, identity, and connection in a way that feels natural and full of joy.

It means so much to me that something I’ve created can become part of your family’s story.

With love,
Mia | Founder, Khula Kids
